Did you know that Earth Day is now considered the largest global celebration on the planet? Since this magnificent blue, green, white marble in space is home to all of us, that distinction makes a lot of sense.
Today I wanted to share some good news for Mother Earth. She is resilient and heals fast when given a chance and sometimes a bit of assistance from humans.
Wild Asses – they are beautiful!
There are currently a few high-profile asses front and center in our world, but they aren’t beautiful, unlike these gorgeous beings. After over a century Onagers, or Asiatic Wild Asses, have returned to Saudi Arabia. Strong conservation measures enabled a herd of seven to be relocated to a Nature Preserve there.
Here’s a brief (two-minute) vid narrated by David Attenborough that offers beautiful images and also some hilarity like the line, “Female asses are mysterious creatures.” Ha ha!
Carbon emissions in UK reaches lowest level since 1872
“The largest factor in emissions falling last year… was a massive 54% drop in UK coal demand,” the Carbon Brief analysis said. “The UK used just 2.1Mt of coal in 2024… this is the lowest amount since 1666, when the UK’s capital city was engulfed in the Great Fire of London.”
100-year-old tortoises become parents for first time!
Here’s some more feel-good news check out this new mom. She is a Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoise, a critically endangered species. She has lived at the Philadelphia Zoo since 1932 and is estimated to be 97 years old. Her name is Mommy, which is fitting now given that these are her first hatchlings.
In 2020 a male named Abrazzo, who is approximately the same age as Mommy, was moved to the zoo and, obviously, they hit it off. Way to go you two!
