I’m curious to hear what you all have to say about this.
The Democratic National Committee has decided not to hold any presidential candidate debates in the primary election because they aren’t wanting any real challenge to incumbent, Joe Biden. This is not unusual. They did the same thing when Presidents Obama and Clinton were running for reelection. The Republican National Committee has done the same thing, avoiding primary debates each time Trump, George W. Bush, and Ronald Reagan were running for reelection.
Cancelling presidential primary debates has become the norm in our system. But while it might be normal, is it good for us?
I’ll be straight up, the specter of another four years of Trump insanity is too dark to consider. And, while it might seem unfathomable to many of us, he is, at this point, the most likely Republican candidate in 2024. Conventional wisdom suggests Biden is the only Democratic candidate who could defeat him.
The problem is “conventional wisdom” is mostly an oxymoron. Biden and the mainstream democratic party leadership are just too invested in, and supported by, the conventional status quo power and money structure to truly address the deep systems changes we must make to avoid collapse in our ecological and financial systems. Meanwhile the Republican leadership is totally off-the-rails chasing the MAGA fringe.
The two other main democratic candidates, Marianne Williamson and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., are definitely not conventional (beyond Kennedy’s name and family ties). I don’t support Kennedy due to his anti-science, anti-vaxx stance. However, he makes some very good points on other important issues. Williamson is getting beat up for her spiritual views. I can tell you as someone who has met and spoken with her, she has steel in her, and a sharp, sharp mind. Her courageous platform is addressing the deep system changes that we must face. Personally, I’d like to hear their views, opinions and ideas whether I agree with them or not. Isn’t that what democracy is all about?
If the Democratic and Republican parties were more about democracy and less about acting as gatekeepers controlling what voters do and don’t get to hear about, I’d be less adamant about the need to evolve beyond a two-party system.
What do you all think?
Much love,
