Another day, another mass shooting in America. The reaction is rote by now. Media will be featuring heart-rending stories about the people killed and the shattered lives of loved ones left behind. The shooter’s motives and methods will be examined. There will be endless discussions about gun laws, public safety, and mental illness.

I remember meeting You first in John Day at an Ecology/ Environmental “fair” 15 or so years ago. My friend Lawrence Schecter had invited me along, and as a consequence we met, and exchanged a few pleasantries. I have spent the past
9 1/2 years in a Vedanta Ashram here in Portland, studying the Gita and the Upanishads, and Meditating hours in the morning and evening. Hence my views tend to be tempered by the sacred scriptures of Old India, and the impending futility which technology has foisted upon the Human Condition. However, Liberation is NOW, if YOU want IT. And only by EXAMPLE will the teaching be offered. YOU are and EXEMPLAR, and I stand with YOU in that! HALLELUJAH
Well thought out and nicely communicated, Cylvia. The single hopeful item I notice is the sudden wide-spread reaction of students themselves, who are increasingly gathering across the nation demanding action from the "Terminal Stupidity" noted in Craig's comments below. The adults in our culture seem incapable and unwilling to stand up to the Corporatocracy you so accurately portrayed in your comments. Perhaps, longingly, we might see some younger backbone showing up unexpectedly. I can only hope and support.
I would add one more failure to your list of causes of the fall of the American empire. Psychology is AWOL on the reasons, insights, causes and consequences of increasing random violence. While most of the solutions are simplistic, linear and without deep understanding of the basic causes. Terminal stupidity full speed ahead.
Cylvia, what would you do if you ran the country? It's a good question for everyone. What you'd do if you ran the world is another good question. There aren't a lot of good ideas floating around, and if I ran the world I'd have everyone thinking about these things.
